We are always open to welcoming new students and researchers to our team. If you are curious about opportunities, please read on.
What it's like to work with the Adaptive Fisheries Lab
As a student or postdoctoral fellow in our team, your core objective is to generate high-caliber research aligned with our thematic areas of focus and committing to our research philosophy as well as producing communication products of that work that are appropriate for the research contexts and audience you wish you reach. I will facilitate your path by providing guidance and advice and co-developing research ideas that are exciting to both of us.
Expectations
The MSc and PhD programs in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech have several required courses and ultimately culminate in the production of a thesis at the end of your degree. Publishing your findings in peer-reviewed journal and communicating your findings in other creative or context-appropriate methodologies is also a critical part of successful research. I will guide you through the process and expect dedication from you on the communication (academic and non-academic) of your findings.
Mentorship and teamwork
In the Adaptive Fisheries Lab we hold regular one-on-one meetings between mentors and students. These are informal and are there for advice and guidance and fruitful discussion. We also hold weekly team meetings where we get together as a group to catch up on each other’s progress, discuss relevant papers, provide feedback on each other’s work, or tackle collaborative projects. Starting in the Fall of 2024 we will initiate weekly dedicated co-writing sessions where we can get together and ensure consistent production of written work.
